  • Dr. Eric Smith: Pastor

    Eric was born into a Navy family and was raised in Coronado, CA. In high school and college he played water polo and guitar. He graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University where he majored in Religious Studies. Pastor Eric ministered in 'Youth for Christ of San Diego' as a Campus Life Director and then began ministry in United Methodist churches as a youth director. He attended the Claremont School of Theology and was ordained in 1981. Since then, he has pastored six churches in Southern California - his last pastorate before St. Andrew’s was Foothills United Methodist Church in San Diego. He is married to Karen and they have four grown children: Christopher (married to Louise), Leslie, Robyn (and Ben) and Lindsay. They have four  young grandchildren, Emily, Rocky, Lucy, and Tigress.  All of the Smith kids have been and are water polo players – the grandchildren are next!

  • Joanne Zap: Office administrator

    Joanne Zap has been the part-time church administrator for St. Andrew’s since May of 2016. She manages the day-to-day office operations of the church. She currently resides in Rancho Mission Viejo with her husband and two sons. Joanne has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University.  In her spare time, she likes to spend time with her family, practice taekwondo, and eat chocolate.

  • Emily Bredthauer, director of Program Ministries

    Emily Bredthauer has been active in various positions in Children & Family Ministries for the past 13 years. She is currently the Director of Program Ministries at St. Andrew's. One of Emily's greatest joys is to see children, youth, and adults meaningfully connect with God and each other. She has a Master in Social Work with an emphasis on children and families. Emily and her husband of nearly 20 years, Greg, have four children, ages 4-13. She loves God, reading, traveling, sewing, Vacation Bible School, and eating dark chocolate.

  • Jens Hurty: director of music

    Jens Hurty has been involved in music all of his life. The son of two choral directors, he grew up singing and playing piano from a young age. In high school Jens realized his passion for choral music and decided to pursue a career in choral conducting after meaningful choral experiences in the Illinois All-State Honors choir during his junior and senior year.
    Jens graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Music Education and Vocal Performance. While attending Augustana, Jens worked as the choral director at South Park Presbyterian Church in Rock Island, Illinois and was the Worship Team Intern for Lutheran Summer Music Academy over the summer of 2014. In addition to his choral ensemble work, he was also active as a bass soloist in recitals and opera performances. For the past four years, Jens has been the full-time Associate Choir Director at Yorkville High School in Yorkville, IL teaching four choirs and piano class. He also performed with two professional choirs in the Chicago area—Cor Cantiamo and The St. Charles Singers.
    Jens is very excited to continue his education at California State University, Fullerton and begin his work as Director of Music at St. Andrew’s.

  • Nancy Rohr: Organist

    Nancy Rohr has been an organist/pianist at 4 Methodist churches for more than 30 years, and has been at St. Andrew’s-by-the-Sea United Methodist Church for over 20 years. She is also a private piano teacher in her home in Capistrano Beach, where she lives with her husband (also a church musician and a pianist at Cal State Fullerton) and family. Nancy has a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from CSUF and is a past president of the Orange Coast Cities chapter of the Music Teachers Association of California. For fun she enjoys hiking, gardening, travel, and taking care of her pets….Toby (age 14, poodle) and Tubby (age 70?, tortoise).

  • taylor breidenthal - sunday school director

    Taylor Breidenthal grew up in San Clemente attending St. Andrew's By-the-Sea with her grandmother. She loves teaching about the Bible and seeing the kids' minds grow as they grow older in church. Taylor is currently attending Saddleback Community College where she is working towards a Bachelors Degree in Theology/Youth Ministry, as well as majoring in Studio Art. Other interests include drawing, grabbing a bite with friends, and playing with her dog, 


  • Joel drew: youth director

    Joel Drew is the Youth Director at St. Andrew’s. He has been married to Trisha, an instructor at Cal-State Fullerton, for 29 years. They have lived in San Clemente for 20 years and have two Labrador Retrievers, Sparky and Auggie. Joel has lived in Southern California for the vast majority of his life having graduated from Marina High School in Huntington Beach, UC Irvine, and Cal-State Fullerton. He holds B.A. in Social Science and an M.S. in Education Administration as well as Elementary and Administrative credentials. You may see him out running on the streets of San Clemente, kayaking in the harbor, or playing drums in a local band.


    Joel has spent his entire professional career engaging in education, training, and the positive development of others. He served as a teacher and principal with the Capistrano Schools for nearly 20 years. Following that, he transitioned to the world of instructional design and training. He has worked for a variety of interesting employers including the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the County of Orange, and CGI where he still provides technical training to clients throughout the U.S.


    Joel loves working with the youth of St. Andrew’s. It gives him the opportunity to relate to a younger, more hip generation in a fun and enjoyable environment. And, frankly, it gives him an excuse to eat a lot of pizza. He finds that he is always learning something new from those with whom he works and thoroughly enjoys the positive and effusive energy these middle and high school students possess. Look for him and say hello on the patio in between and after the services.      

  • Maelynn Schlipp, Tyke Time Director

    Maelynn began her college career at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. She later transferred and graduated from Western Michigan University finishing her degree with a Bachelors in Marketing on a Division I full-ride tennis scholarship. She has held various national roles in the non-profit sector. Becoming a mom changed her life in a very intense way. She soon learned it was much more than what people described to her. Children are such a gift and give so much hope to life that even on her hardest day, she has a great sense of peace. Maelynn has coached tennis to pre-schoolers, volunteered in schools, offered meals and helping hands to moms in need over the years, and always will lend an ear to whatever crazy story parenthood has presented her friends and family. She understands the need for parent support and focus on a child's development during the first five years and is excited to start "Tyke Time", the first child-led play space in San Clemente.
